Meet the Band
Chakrabir Lama (Guitar)
Perhaps Kathmandu's finest gypsy jazz guitarist, Chakrabir Lama is the lead guitarist of Hot Club of Patan.
Winning the title of Nepal's "Guitar Maestro 2010" Chakra's guitar stylings have brought the band from strength to strength.
His major influence being the musical mastery of Django Rheinhardt, Chakra has tirelessly studied the guitar and the music of Gypsy jazz all of his life. He has now become one of Nepal's most sought after pedagogues, bringing up the new generation of guitarists in Kathmandu.
Riken Maharjan (Guitar)
One of the founding members of the band, Riken Maharjan is a self-taught guitarist, passionate about the gypsy jazz genre and the history surrounding the migration of gypsy music from South Asia to Europe and back again.
With close ties to the Roma culture, Riken has travelled frequently to Romania, one of the worlds main bastions of gypsy music. He has spent time developing his knowledge and skills straight from the source.
He opened Gypsy Swing Patan in 2018, Nepal's first and only gypsy jazz club and venue. Since then his work has never stopped, promoting the music of jazz manouche in Nepal and propogating it's proliferation amongst musicians young and old.
Kshitiz Lama (Saxophone)
A veteran of Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory (KJC) Kshitiz Lama is the first saxophone player in Nepal to champion the gypsy jazz genre.
Playing saxaphone, an instrument that whilst common in traditional and modern jazz, is rarely heard in the context of gypsy jazz, Kshitiz has had to develop his very own approach to playing this style; this, he has done with tenacity and enthusiasm.
His unique style is known throughout Nepal and he is a sought after player having collaborated with many of Nepal's finest bands and musicians including "mooncake" and the well known "Fictioners". He is seen performing at the Blues and Roots Festival and International Bass Day amongst many others.
Saroj Bhattarai (Violin)
Saroj Bhattarai is responsbile for defining the gypsy jazz violin style within Nepal. Brought up in the western classical tradition he is known as one of Nepal's most prolific violinists.
Also a veteran of the Narayan Gopal Orchestra, Saroj began to apply his technical mastery of the violin to the gypsy jazz genre when the band formed in 2018.
Head of strings at the New Millennium School he is instrumental in propagating an enthusiasm for the jazz movement within Nepal, a place that until has rarely heard violin being used in free styles and outside of the context of western and eastern classical music.
Salik Maharjan (Guitar)
Salik Maharjan started his journey with the guitar in early years. A close childhood friend of Riken Maharjan they began to teach themselves guitar from the tender age of 12. Learning guitar with severely limited resources Salik was industrious in his pursuit of guitar mastery.
Drawing influence from the guitar stylings of Stochelo Rosenberg and Joscho Stephan, Salik has developed a rocksteady approach to rhythm guitar playing and forms the musical backbone of the Hot Club of Patan, an indispensible member of the band.
Prateek Pradhan (Double Bass)
Prateek Pradhan played a crucial role during the formative years of the band using his skills in management and digital media to support the promotion of the bands musical activities. Inspired by a lifelong love of jazz music Prateek joined the band as double bassist back in 2020.
In Nepal where young bass players contend with very limited access to double bass specific learning resources and almost no teachers of the double bass, Prateek has used his unshakeable passion for the double bass to become one of Nepals most skilled double bass players. He's a colleague of Kshitiz's in Mooncake and became known for his early band, paper boat.
His double bass sound is the foundation on which the band builds it's music.
Rigzin Lama (Guitar)
Rigzin Lama is one of Nepal's most exciting young guitarists playing today.
Another veteran of Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory where he studied alongside Kshitiz, Rigzin has become a master on his instrument, playing with some of Nepal's finest bands.
Rigzin is kept very busy playing guitar in well known international touring band, Kharma. He is also well known for his work with Nepali folk / metal fusion band Bhibuti who have been recognised for the innovation in blending two styles rarely heard side by side, sharing stages with huge names in the Nepali grassroots music scene such as Kutumba.
Rigzin has an unwavering dedication to his instrument and the music of Gypsy Jazz and is an invaluable member of the band.
Johnny Shrestha (Percussion)
Johnny Shrestha is an innovator in his area; the usage of hand percussion applied to the context of gypsy jazz music.
Johnny's skills extend to a variety of persussion instruments but when playing with the Hot Club of Patan he excells in his playing of the musical spoons.
The tradition of playing the spoons is a skill that is mostly found in the folk music traditions of the celtic nations as well as Appalacian America. Johnny has drawn influence from these age-old traditions and applied his percussive skills with the spoons to a whole new area of music where hand percussion is an entirely new feature.
He lends the Hot Club of Patan a percussive character that drives their swing.
