Benjamin Errington

(Edinburgh, United Kingdom)

Ben Errington is a violinist from Edinburgh, Scotland. He began his journey with the violin in childhood, studying the classical Suzuki method. Beginning his professional career through the vehicle of street performing at the young age of 8 years old he soon began getting involved with free styles of playing, joining bands that occupied musical spaces from folk to punk.

After living abroad and having a hiatus from music in 2015 - 2017 he returned to Scotland where he became heavily involved in the folk music scene, particularly in the bluegrass and oldtime music of the Appalacian mountains of America. The bluegrass genre draws a lot of influence and technical commonality with the Jazz Manouche style.

His band "Sociograss" plays a blend of Bluegrass, early jazz, western swing and oldtime. The "Auld Reekie String Band" are an oldtime Appalacian String Band drawing influence from the music of Civil War era America. Both bands are regular fixtures at festivals throughout Europe.

"Wolfnote" is a heavily electrified project that Ben plays strings with; they produce a unique sound that whilst difficult to categorise blends symphonic layered string parts with a band sound similar to Sigur Ros or late Radiohead.

In 2022 Ben first travelled to Nepal where he became involved with the local Jazz Manouche scene, playing with the "Hot Club of Patan" in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
